2013 and 2014 Draft

So, I know it's been a while since I posted, I apologize as I got wrapped up in classes this semester and also with the NFL season itself.  Now there are 2 weeks left in the regular season and I'm pretty sure Dallas will find some way to blow their slim playoff chance for this year as they have done the past few years.  Week 17 and we face a win and in situation and we get blown out showing completely that we don't want to win.  The players want to of course, but the game plan sucks to get us there.  More on that subject later. 

For now, here are the final grades I gave to teams based on their 2013 drafts, this does not include undrafted free agents signed by the team nor does it reflect trades and free agency signings by each team.  You'll notice Dallas is 2nd on the list, this isn't to say that they had the 2nd best draft, but based on the players rankings where I had them ranked and the average of those players.  You can have 8 really awesome picks and 2 that were super low rated by me and those 2 kill the average.  Seattle had a slim crop of draft picks and so the few that were bad hurt them.

Now, it's time to look ahead to the class of 2014.  I haven't compiled my list or even started on it, but know that my list this year will take into affect aspects of what I feel a team needs.  There are 17 positions on a team if you generalize OT, OG, S, Returner instead of breaking them down as LT, RT, LG, RG, etc.  Taking that into consideration, I'll formulate a value based on the weakest performance from http://www.profootballfocus.com per position per team so that a "needs" list can be generated.  This will then take the top overall need for a position, let's say Dallas needs a safety above all else, this will then put the highest value on the safety and if you multiply that value times the players rank you'll have a better sense of how that player will help the team.  Any suggestions, please feel free to post a comment in the section below. 

Now, I want to take a note and talk about wrestling.  I'm not sure how many of you saw the WWE pay-per-view(PPV) TLC (Tables, Ladders, and Chairs) this past Sunday (the 15th of December), I had what I had hoped would be the privilege of watching a PPV that should launch the company into it's annual "Road to Wrestlemania" PPV string.  This PPV was pretty much trash.  There were no titles to swap hands.  There were two matches that were a 3-on-1 handicap matches with the two mini-stables the company currently has, the Wyatt Family and The Shield (images below).  Both of those matches the winner was clearly predetermined based on hype going into the match with CM Punk beating the Shield (which somehow couldn't be beat by teams of superstars before like Cena, Ryback, and Daniel Bryan together but now could be beaten by a single person) and Daniel Bryan losing to the Wyatt Family.  The main event was a unification match of the WWE Title and the World Heavyweight Championship.  Randy Orton was the WWE champ and John Cena was the World champ, it was the only match of the entire event that involved the "theme" TLC.  No other matches were even no disqualification rules or anything special.  The match between Orton and Cena ended with John Cena doing his best impersonation of someone who had actually been beat up, as he laid with his head against a propped up table, Orton had handcuffed him to the lowest rope, and after Cena managed to undo the bottom turnbuckle in an attempt to get to the ladder in the middle of the ring, Orton hopped down from the ladder and "tugged" Cena off the ladder where he then hit his head against the propped up table.  Being a fan of the NFL and having seen concussions in all sports, Cena was and is fine.  Orton then took what felt like 15 minutes to milk his way to the top of the ladder and obtain both belts.

2013 Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears

Continuing my blog analyzing 2 teams per day, alphabetically one from the AFC and one from the NFC.
I comprised my list of eligible players for the NFL draft and gave them statistical values based on other pro scouts and guru's, like Mike Mayock, Gil Brandt, and Todd McShay.  I also factored in things such as awards won, All-American Team status, etc., and used that value to have a better understanding of how good a player is, a consensus if you will.

For the ratings a team receives I will be using helmets instead of stars and they mean the following:
5 Helmets: Definate Playoff team/SuperBowl contender
4 Helmets: High Playoff probability
3 Helmets: Playoffs aren't entirely out of question
2 Helmets: Slim to no playoff hope
1 Helmet:  This team is now on the clock for the 2014 NFL Draft.

Supplemental Draft

On July 12, 2012, the Browns selected WR Josh Gordon of Baylor with a second round pick in the supplemental draft. The Browns will forfeit their second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.^[36] Gordon became only the second player drafted by the Browns in the supplemental draft, the other being QB Bernie Kosar in 1985.

What to Watch for in 2013:

This team's record is not a true indicator of how well they played last year.  Bill Parcell's once said "You are what your record says you are", however in Cleveland's case, they lost 5 games by a touchdown or less and another 2 games by 10 points or less; pending a play or two each of those games going Cleveland's way, this team could have stacked another 7 W's in the win column and been a serious play-off team possibly with the bye and home-field advantage.  Looking forward to 2013; Barkevious "Kiki" Mingo drafted sixth overall under new general manager Michael Lombardi and company should be very interesting to watch.  He was the 3rd highest outside linebacker on my board behind Jarvis Jones and Dion Jordan.  This team is a ground and pound offense behind sophomores at running back Trent Richardson, quarterback Brandon Weeden and wide receiver Josh Gordon make up an aerial attack that still leaves something to be desired.   The defense last year kept this team in most games and should do the same this year with improvements through free agency and the draft.  Watch for Cleveland to make a push in their division with Pittsburgh losing key components this non-playing season.  Members of the Dog Pound should never give up hope as long as Cleveland has a team.

What to Watch For: 
With the retirement of Brian Urlacher the Bears defense now has to prove they can go out and win without

him.  The coaching change to Marc Trestman from longtime coach Lovie Smith will also be interesting to watch.  Rookie Kyle Long should bring some intensity to this offensive line which time will tell if it helps keep Cutler upright or not.  Brandon Marshall, Jay Cutler and Matt Forte should remain solid options for most fantasy football leagues with the exception being Cutler unless you can get him in later rounds.  Julius Peppers, Henry Melton and Lance "Bam Bam" Briggs still anchor this defense with Charles "Peanut" Tillman being one of the better corners in the league.  The Bears drafted Bostic and Greene with consecutive picks and clearly showed they understand the void left by Urlacher's departure.  Injuries usually do this team in as well, either at RB, offensive line, or on defense.  Did this team make enough moves in the non-playing season to compete with Minnesota and Green Bay for the NFC North?

What to Watch for in 2013:
My take on the Bengals is first you think of the offense, with A.J. Green, Gresham, and Dalton running that offense.  The top 3 picks for this team should all do well by the middle of the season pending injuries.  Mike Zimmer, the defensive coordinator, almost always gets the most out of his players and now he has Margus Hunt on the defensive line to play with next to Geno Atkins and company.  My player to watch in specific is Giovani Bernard, the rookie running back.  Bernard is a slasher, someone who can cut mid stride and make people miss.  He's dynamic and should do well in this system if he can stay healthy.

Rating for 2013 NFL Season: 4 Helmets out of 5.  
This team will make the playoffs depending on their division, someone has to make it someone has to sit it out.

What to Watch For:
The Carolina Panthers are very young across the board except for at wide receiver where Steve Smith

seems to defy time and still produces with prime numbers.  The team had a very solid draft with the few picks that they did have.  I was expecting more trading on draft day moving the team down the board to pick up a few extra picks, but that was not the case.  Carolina stuck with the picks they had and were content to get solid players with them.  Star Lotulelei should be a very good player for this team and will help Luke Kuechly out on that defense, he could be the star they need to get over the hump, pun intended.  If Cam Newton improves his accuracy just a bit and makes slightly better decisions this team could be playoff bound as a Wildcard team.
